July Update

To be honest every time I come to write a new blog update I have to think REALLY hard about what I even did that month! Time goes by so fast and everything just mushes together.

In the beginning of July we had a mission team here from Vero Beach, Florida. It was really cool to have all of them but best of all my team mate from last year, Jonny, was on the trip! We got to do a lot of outreaches and go to different parts of Guatemala. One of my favorite things that we got to do together was go to Escuintla, it's one of my favorite parts to go! We went to the local school in Escuintla to do a soup kitchen and just play/hang out with the kids. I always have so much fun there and get so dirty playing like a 5 year old with the kids :) It was only my 3rd time there over the past 6 months and I had a couple kids run up to me saying my name! It melted my heart.

When the team left, Lydia's two friends came here to visit for 3 weeks! They came along with us everywhere we went. They kept saying they were "missionaries" for 3 weeks! We all had a blast whether it was going to the schools, taking the chicken bus, drinking coffee, or just exploring. Lydia and I had fun playing tourists with them. We went 2 hours away to hike the volcano Pacaya. It was their 1st time doing it and my 2nd time. It is so beautiful and a really fun experience.

July also had some hard times. One of our cooks, Myra, has cancer and has been waiting to have her operation. She finally was able to have it after being in pain for so many months. We got to visit her in the hospital right after. Please keep her and her family in prayer. The doctors were able to take out 4 tumors but there are still more. They have to wait another 6 months before operating because her body can't handle it.

With July came Ignite class 9 woooohoooo! There are 12 newbies living here on property, attending classes everyday, and getting to know Guatemala. Please keep them in your prayers as they prepare to go out onto the field.

Church is growing here! I love being a part of the body and fellowshipping every Sunday. I do worship for the kids every Sunday in English & Spanish, its fun and it makes me learn more Spanish songs so that's good! I also have the privilege of serving in children ministry a couple times month translating from Spanish to English because our church is bilingual :) We had our monthly women's bible study. We are going through the book of Proverbs. Also, Lydia and I are continuing in being a part of youth group and have been asked to help out with it more! We have it every Friday night and it's always a blast! I love being with those kids and seeing them grow in the Word. We have had 4 new kids which is a huge blessing :)

Kids club, oh Kids Club. Always good things to say about Kids Club. Its been super fun- as always. I LOOOOVE seeing the same faces that faithfully come every week and it has been cool to get to know the new kids. I love meeting kids on their first day, hanging out with them, making them feel welcomed and then seeing them again the next week. When I remember their names they have the biggest smiles :)

And who can forget the schools? They are a HUGE part of what I do down here. I love it. Love it. I never thought I would be doing what I am doing. I have seen growth and progress in my students, we are almost through the year! Only about 2 more months to go! I have been going even deeper on the bible lessons- it is something God has really been pressing on my heart. It's a spiritual battle though and I get discouraged. But God always lifts me up, gives me the strength to carry on and keeps His promise of never leaving me. Just last Friday He gave me a devine appointment. I had just taught 4 classes and was preparing to teach my final class of the day when I come to find out they aren't there. So I sat down and began to go over some stuff when a little boy sits down by me. He was supposed to be mopping but started talking to me. One thing led to another and the door was wide open for me to share the gospel (this is all in Spanish mind you), so I did. I had my Spanish Bible and I was sharing with him verses. He looked like he was really soaking it all in and was listening intently. He looked a little nervous like he wasn't sure what to do but he kept asking questions and listening. I told him how he could be saved and offered to pray with him but told him that he could also talk to God whenever he wanted. I told him that I would be praying for him. He seemed really grateful for that. His name is Alex and he has been in my mind since that moment. He told me he didn't have a bible but wanted one. That's something else on my heart- to give my students bibles. I don't know how but I want to.

So please pray for Alex and all the other kids who are open to the gospel. Pray for me that I would be filled with the Holy Spirit and open to His leading. Pray for endurance to finish this year out strong. Pray for more boldness. Pray for the church here. Pray for the new Ignite class that is training. Pray for the lost. Pray for the persecuted church. Above all, pray for HIS will to be done.

What happened in June & what God is doing in my heart

June has come and gone. June marks my 6th month here in Guatemala and this means that I had to leave the country for my visa trip.
So Lydia & I left together on the 19th and headed back to the states. I had the privilege of meeting Lydia's whole family :) it was truly a blessing! Aside from that, I met her church family and a lot of friends (she is so popular haha).
We had some long travels while we were in the states. And everywhere we went we heard people speaking Spanish. My heart longed to be back in Guatemala even though the ten days away were great.
When we were returning to Guatemala we had a layover in Mexico. And as we were landing, I knew we were one step closer to Guatemala. I couldn't help but have happy tears flowing from my eyes.
It is such a beautiful and inexpressible thing to know where God wants you and to be there. There is no better place to be than where God wants you- to be in the center of His will. And something I have been really, really noticing a lot lately is that His will looks different for each individual. And something that is SO important in that is not being critical of others who don't have that same calling on their lives. Instead of comparing, praise God for what He is doing in others. This can also go the other way. Not only is it wrong for me to look at others and wonder why they don't see things the way I do and be upset, but I have to be careful to not look at others and what they are doing and become jealous and think that that is THE way.
God works in so many ways. He desires obedience from us. If that means living in Guatemala- then live in Guatemala! If that means working in an office- then work in an office! If that means being a mom- then be a mom! Don't look at the worship leader, or the missionary, or the pastor and think, "That is what serving God is- that is the only way." Don't strive to fit into a mold that isn't what God has for you. Be open and obedient to His voice.
In my devotions I just finished reading Jeremiah and now I am moving on to Lamentations. Wow. Jeremiah was a prophet who was faithful even when he couldn't see any fruit or results. In life we are always looking for results. But what if God called us to do something but never allowed us to see the results? Would we still do it? Would we still be faithful? Obedience. That is key. Obedience as a response to God not as a requirement. Where is my heart? Take away the activity and "glamor" of ministry. Is God enough? Is following Him enough? What if I never see any fruit in my student's lives? Am I still going to be faithful?
All this is a wake up call. What am I living for? What am I working for? What am I here for? It is all for God. He has called me here and I want to simply be His obedient servant.
The states were really great, but I was so stoked to be back here and do what I have been doing. It was really good to take a step back though and really think over things and allow God to search my heart. And as I overlook exactly what God is doing in me, I see my need for Him more and more. I can't do this life on my own. Praise God that He is faithful always! He gives us strength and wisdom  that are indispensable!
"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him." James 1:5

Prayer requests:
- Potter's Field is in 7 schools this year teaching english and the bible to the kids. pray for us teachers that God would strengthen us and help us & pray for the kids that they would know Jesus.
- The July class of the IGNITE program is coming soon!
- I want to ask for prayer that God would continue to guide me and provide for me. I know when you follow after Him He provides. He has been faithful to provide finances in the past and I know He will continue to do so in the future.

Nothing like being back where you belong :) this is a picture of Angel & me at kids club my first day back from the states.

Lydia and I got invited to a luncheon with all the teachers from one of our schools and the director of about 150+ schools!!! It was such a blessing and really cool to get to know the teachers and principal better. We are just trying to show them Jesus and let Him shine.

Prayer

Prayer is a vital aspect of the Christian life.
I read a devotional by Oswald Chambers the other day about prayer and he said, "Our thinking about prayer, whether right or wrong, is based on our own mental concept of it. The correct concept is to think of prayer as the breath in our lungs and the blood from our heart."
It's to be that constant flow, something that I don't even have to think about doing.
"Prayer is not an exercise, it is the life of a saint."
We have this privilege to talk to the maker of the universe and a lot of times we forfeit it. I am reminded of one of my favorite hymns that goes like this:
  1. What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
    What a privilege to carry
    Everything to God in prayer!
Oh, what peace we often forfeit,
Oh, what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
    Everything to God in prayer!

And how true is that! We hold on and bear the things that we should be giving to Him. Oh what peace there is in constant communion with my Father!

Now for the flip side... We know that Jesus lived a life of prayer here on earth- always talking to the Father and ONLY doing His will. But how many times do we see Him retreating and praying alone. It is important to have those times of dedicated prayer. And that is something that God put on my heart to do for my 6th grade class...
So I did it on Friday and I looked at all the "papelitos" (slips of paper) and saw all my student's names and even requests!
How cool is that?? I just finished praying for all of them by name and their requests... Man, these kids are amazing.
I just thought I would share a couple of them and YOU can join in praying for them:
Angelica Jazmin wants prayer for her family and her exams which were this past week.
Heidy Mishell wrote, "For me and my brother's exams, for my health and that there would be love in my family."
Ronald asked that I would pray for all the teachers at his school that they would be taken care of.
Jessica Cecilia wrote, "I love Jesus but I want you to enlighten me and I want to gain love."

These kids need to know that God loves them. They need Jesus.

14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written:
“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace,
Who bring glad tidings of good things!”
-Romans 10:14&15

friday.

Friday.
It finally came.
Today was the day I was dreading and looking forward to all at the same time.
On Sunday, God gave me this idea to do with my Friday's 6th grade class. The thing is, in every class I read a Bible story and in some classes it is a real struggle. But last Friday it was like my 6th grade got it. We read the story of David and Goliath and they acted it out as I read it in Spanish. They got it! We talked about it- I was able to explain it in Spanish... Miracles. So God spoke to me and gave me an idea.
Sometimes I feel like David. I am young, inadequate, feel unprepared to do things but I don't need to be afraid because God is with me just like He was with David as he faced the giant. But I am here in Guatemala for one reason- Jesus. And I need to be showing that more. God is pushing me to do things with purpose not just because they are in front of me. I pray for my classes- all 12 of them. But God gave me the idea to make a jar for this 6th grade in particular. I want to pray for them by name.
I loved this idea! I was like wow thanks God this is great! And then fear set in... What if they laugh? What if no one gets it? What if I choke and can't explain what it is to them? You can't speak Spanish Quincey- YOU'RE A GRINGA!
But God's voice is louder. He reassured me that this was His idea, that He was going to use it and that I just have to be faithful.
So today came... And of corse 6th grade is my fifth and final class of the day. I taught them and then I ended by taking out the jar. And I started speaking... I said, "You all know that I am from the United States but I came here to Guatemala. Who knows why I am here?" and I got the answer, "to teach us english!" In which I replied, "Well yes, but there is a reason more important than that." And they said, "To learn Spanish!" And with that I laughed and said, "Yeah I need to do that too, but I am here because I am a missionary. I am a Christian. I have a relationship with Jesus. Remember what we do here every week? We read a bible story. And last week it was about David. A lot of times I feel like David. I am small and I feel like I can't do anything. It scares me to be up here teaching you but I know what David knew. God is with me. He wants me to be here to show you that He loves you. You know that I talk to God all the time. I have 12 classes- 5 here, and 7 in other schools. I am praying for them all but I really want to pray for you all by name. You guys are special to me. Before I was afraid of 6th grade... I never really liked 6th grade until you guys." At this point I got a kid fake tearing up in the back haha. But I continued to explain that I wanted them to write their names on the little slip of paper and if they have something specific going on that they need prayer for they can write that too. It was SO cool to see that they actually responded... and it wasn't in laughter!
God is soon good. He honors our steps of faith and gives us the words to speak.
This is just an encouragement to ACT. Do what God puts on your heart. Obey Him and know that He is with you.
I know that God is working in these 6th graders. And I am so excited to see what God is going to do through this little (ugly if I do say so myself) jar that looks like a 5 year old made haha.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.- Hebrews 11:6

Update

So it's already mid May.
How did this happen?

I've been back here in Guatemala for about 4 months now.
Everything is going great- super busy but amazing!

The main thing I do is work in the public schools 3 days a week.

I have 300+ students from kindergarten to sixth grade.
I go in and have about 45 minutes with each class. I walk in and say, "Good morning class," and they respond, "Good morning Quincey."
Then I ask who wants to pray and I see their hands go up and they scream "Yo, Yo, Yo!"

After we pray, I read a bible lesson in Spanish to them and we talk about it.
We started with creation and are going through the Old Testament right now.
After the story, we go right into our English lesson for that day and end with our memory verse in English and Spanish.

The kids are all doing really great! It's awesome to see them grow and learn and be excited to learn.
One of the coolest things is knowing that I am going to be with them for the whole school year. I get to build relationships with these kids in the class room and outside of it.
Every Wednesday we have Kid's Club here on the property. And we invite our students to come. Some of the schools are farther than others but we do have one that is pretty close. We try to walk the kids who want to come on Wednesdays. It's such a fun time of just getting to know them and showing them the love of Christ.

Speaking of Kid's Club...

It's one of my favorite times of the week! The new Ignite interns of class 8 are in charge. They plan it every week so I just get to show up and help in any way but mainly just play with the kids and hang out. It is awesome to see the kids that have been coming since I was here last year & all the new faces. Every week we have lunch for them, play games, have kids worship, and a bible story. Also, the moms have a bible study that goes on at the same time. It's growing so much! All glory to God for that!

Some girls & I at church on Sunday
Calvary Chapel Antigua is the church here on property. We have our Sunday services every week and I have the privilege of helping in kids ministry with worship and even translating (its scary :/ haha).  God is doing a work here in the body and I am so blessed to be a part of it.
The "youth group crew" hanging out.
The service on Sunday is bilingual but on Wednesday nights we have Spanish church. I go to it every week and LOVE it.
It helps me learn so much Spanish and from the Word of God too.
We also have youth group on Friday nights which are like my favorite ever! I always loves jr. high so I fit right in :) It's a small group of us who meet together, go through the Word, worship, play games and just hang out.

Those are the main things that happen here on a weekly basis.
It gets pretty busy here but we love it.

Please pray:
-For me to continue to rely on the Lord in everything.
-For my health, that God would continue to protect me. I have been having sinus issues and infections but God is good and I'm doing a lot better.
-For me and the other English teachers here to have boldness to proclaim the gospel in the schools and wherever else the Lord takes us.
-For the church as a whole to be strengthened and for God to rise up servants as it is growing.

"Blessed be the Lord, who daily loads us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah." Psalm 68:19

Who am I that You have brought me this far?

This is San Juan Del Obispo- the very first school that Potter's Field got into in Guatemala. Today we took a bus just to visit. Lydia and I don't teach here this year but it brought back so many memories.
The knots in my stomach that I got every Friday on the way to school.
The kids that my team and I taught together.
This is God's work. This is where we can look back and say, "It started here."
And look how faithful He has been- how far He has gotten us! Now PFM Guatemala is reaching over 2,000 kids with the Word of God and English.
How great is God!
Be faithful with little and He will trust you with much!

Better Late Than Never

So I've been wanting to do this- this whole blog thing- for a while now. I'm really good at forgetting. But here we go.
I'm going on year number 2 here in Guatemala and I really just want to share what the Lord is doing here.
So that's the purpose of this, to show where the Lord takes me as I follow Him.
All I can say is I am glad I'm not the one leading.
Gracias a Dios. Por Siempre.
